Part of The Civic Trust Network

Environmental champion Philip Kolvin has taken over as Chairman at the campaigning charity, the Civic Trust. 

Philip is a practising barrister with a long standing interest in the built and green environment, having served as a national Trustee of the Campaign to Protect Rural England. He has been directly involved in campaigns such as the Crystal Palace Campaign, which successfully prevented a multiplex cinema from being built on an historic park. Chairman of the Institute of Licensing, Philip has a particular interest in the night time economy and its impact upon communities.

Philip said “I view the Civic Trust as the leading body working for the benefit of communities, through improving standards in the spaces and places where we all live work and spend our leisure time”.

“As the umbrella organisation for over 750 civic societies, the Civic Trust makes a huge contribution to our quality of life, and I am proud to join as Chairman. I look forward to leading the Civic Trust in our work to champion civic pride and duty amongst all citizens, be they residents, businesses, politicians or developers”

Retiring Chairman, Nigel Burton, will continue his work with the Civic Trust as a Trustee. Nigel, who was Director of Development & Services at Waitrose said “I am very proud of the achievements of the Civic Trust over the last three years, especially the new levels of energy within the civic society movement. The Civic Trust is a vibrant organisation which has a real passion for making better places for people”

He has particular interests in the night time economy and gambling, having published Licensed Premises:Law and Practice and Gambling for Local Authorities; Licensing, Planning and Regeneration. He is also author of Saving Open Space, a guide for campaigners.
3. The Civic Trust manages the Green Flag Award scheme (the national standard for parks and green spaces), the Country Parks Network and Heritage Open Days. It runs the Civic Trust Awards.
