Convoys Wharf Social Impact Assessment
Client: Pepys and Creekside Community Forums
Date: January 2004 - March 2005

CTRU was commissioned to carry out desk research and stakeholder interviews on the potential impact of this proposed residential development on services and the existing community.

Convoys Wharf is one of the last remaining industrial riverside sites on the River Thames at Deptford. It was once Henry VIII's royal docks' victualling yards, and has recently been vacated by News International.

A Richard Rogers masterplan for mixed use, including 5 000 homes and three towers of up to 24 storeys, is proposed in an area of 80% social housing.

Local forums were concerned about the impact this scheme would have on local services - it has the potential to double the ward population. The loss of employment land and the potential of the deepwater berth to become a cruise liner terminal for the capital, were other significant concerns.

Results of Civic Trust research and interviews on health and education, as well as a second report on the local economy, were presented at a series of seminars to key decision makers at local and policy level.
